Also known as rocket—a fitting description for such a powerful green—arugula is a pungent relative of watercress, radish and mustard. A little of this feisty leaf goes a long way. Serve it on its own with shavings of Parmesan cheese and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. Warning: It’s highly addictive, and you’ll soon be stuffing it into sandwiches and sprinkling it over hot-from-the-oven pizza.

With its complex flavour, arugula is a darling among chefs. It’s the easiest thing for a home cook to toss into a salad to take it to the next level. A perfect side for steak, arugula wilts slightly from the heat of the meat, but still tastes great.
